Indicative parts and labor estimates before 5% VAT, not fixed packages. High capacity, specialist fluids and complex access can cost more. A fluid exchange can use more fluid than a drain and refill. Leaks, repairs and additional diagnosis are separate and require approval. Confirm the final total including VAT.
Choose the method for the transmission
Neither method is automatically right for every car. The service procedure, condition and maintenance history should guide the recommendation.
The accessible fluid is drained and the gearbox refilled using its specified procedure. Where required and serviceable, the filter, pan gasket or integrated filter pan is replaced.
A normal drain may leave fluid in the torque converter, cooler or other passages. The refill quantity can therefore differ from the transmission’s total dry capacity.
An exchange replaces a greater proportion of the old fluid through an appropriate procedure. Suitability depends on the transmission and the manufacturer’s guidance.
Ask what the quoted method involves and whether any machine, cleaning agent or additive is proposed. Do not assume a chemical or pressure flush is required for routine maintenance.

Use the schedule for your car
There is no reliable universal mileage interval for every transmission. The vehicle’s maintenance schedule and the gearbox specification are the starting point.
Compare the last invoice, current mileage and elapsed time with the applicable schedule. Tell us about towing, repeated heavy loads or other use covered by the manufacturer’s demanding use guidance.
Arrange an assessment before choosing a method. A high mileage reading alone does not establish whether an exchange is suitable or whether the gearbox already has an internal fault.
These terms do not create one maintenance rule for all models. Check the exact vehicle and transmission guidance, including any qualifications for operating conditions.
Describe how you use the car so the correct schedule can be reviewed. Local heat is not a reason to invent one shorter interval or substitute an unspecified “hot climate” fluid.
From first enquiry to handover
Share the model, year, engine, mileage and last gearbox service. The VIN or gearbox code may be needed to identify the exact fluid and parts.
Confirm the method, fluid quantity, filter or pan, seals, labor and total including VAT. Any chargeable investigation should be agreed before it begins.
The agreed work follows the appropriate fill and level procedure. Relevant leak and operation checks depend on the vehicle and the work performed.
Keep the invoice and discuss the next scheduled service. If a separate fault is found, request an explanation and quote before additional work.

An accessible drain and refill can often be completed during a workshop visit, while a pan or filter service, temperature controlled level procedure or more involved access needs longer. Confirm the expected collection time after your vehicle and service method are identified.
No. Filter design and service access vary. Some filters are separate, some are part of the pan, and some are not a normal external service item. The quote should state whether a filter or pan is required and included.
Use a fluid that satisfies the exact specification required for your transmission. A general claim such as “suitable for automatic cars” is not enough. Ask which specification and application support the choice.
It may address an appropriate maintenance need, but jerky shifting can also have mechanical, hydraulic, electrical or control causes. Describe the symptom first so the workshop can advise whether diagnosis should precede a fluid service.
Not necessarily. The transmission, differential and transfer case can be separate service items with different fluids and capacities. Some layouts combine components. The correct vehicle information determines which items are included in your quote.
The fluid level and leak source need assessment. Topping up does not repair a leak, and the wrong fluid or filling method can cause problems. Stop safely and seek advice if there is a major leak, loss of drive, severe slipping or an overheating warning.
