Compare the repair options

Repair, rebuild or replace the gearbox?

The options below give you a starting point for the cost. Which one suits your car depends on the confirmed fault, the condition inside the gearbox and the parts available. A warning code alone cannot settle that choice.

A confirmed component fault

Targeted repair

Suitable when testing identifies a repairable issue, such as a valve body, solenoid, seal, wiring or control problem, without evidence that a complete overhaul is needed.

We explain the test results and how the repair addresses your symptom. A simple wiring or external leak repair may cost less than this component-work range.

Internal wear or damage

Gearbox rebuild

The unit is removed and dismantled so worn or damaged internal parts can be assessed. A rebuild should specify the work and replacement items identified from inspection.

We agree any removal and internal inspection fee first, including the amount due if you decide to stop. If the rebuild proceeds, overlapping labor is included once.

When replacement makes sense

Replacement unit

Consider a compatible new, remanufactured or available used unit when the existing gearbox is uneconomical to repair or the alternative is more practical.

A used automatic for a common Japanese or Korean car can offer a lower-cost alternative. We verify the gearbox code, supplier, condition and warranty terms. New, remanufactured and European units are quoted separately.

Manual car with a slipping clutch?

A clutch fault does not automatically mean replacing the gearbox. A standard new clutch kit and fitting is estimated at AED 1,700–4,300 including VAT. Flywheel work or a separate hydraulic fault costs extra.

Only due for transmission fluid maintenance? If the gearbox is working normally and its service is due, our gearbox oil change service covers routine fluid maintenance. Slipping or a fault warning needs investigation first; fresh fluid cannot restore worn internal parts.

A rebuild should follow evidence

What should transmission diagnosis check?

To choose between those repair options, we start with the symptoms and your car’s history. Tell us when the fault occurs, whether the car is hot or cold, and about any recent repairs or fluid changes. We then agree which checks are needed.

  1. Check the symptoms and gearbox type

Identify the vehicle, transmission type and warning messages. A road test is considered only when safe. Engine, mounting or driveline issues can sometimes resemble a gearbox fault.

  2. Test the likely causes

Checks may include fault codes, live readings, electrical supply, leaks and fluid condition. Fluid level must be checked using the procedure and temperature specified for that gearbox. The findings determine whether mechanical or hydraulic tests are needed.

  3. Explain the next decision

Separate confirmed findings from items that need more investigation. If removal or internal inspection is required, agree the charge and what happens if you decline the repair.

Same symptom does not mean the same repair

Which transmission does your car have?

The gearbox design determines which tests and parts apply. Send the model and year so we can identify the unit; we may ask for the VIN to confirm the exact version.

Conventional automatic

The torque converter transfers engine power through fluid and a lock-up clutch. The valve body and solenoids control fluid pressure for gear changes. Testing separates faults in these controls from worn internal clutches before choosing the repair.

Dual clutch and DSG

DSG is a type of dual-clutch gearbox. Its mechatronic unit combines electronic and hydraulic controls, so a control fault needs different work from worn clutches. Wet and dry clutch designs also need their own tests and service procedures.

CVT

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) needs tests and fluid matched to its design. An eCVT badge does not necessarily mean it uses the same mechanism as a belt or chain CVT.

Manual gearbox

Difficult selection or clutch slipping can involve the clutch, release system, linkage or internal gearbox. Inspect the cause before deciding that the complete gearbox needs replacement.

Describe what the car is doing

When to arrange a gearbox inspection

You do not need to identify the failed part before calling. Describe how the car behaves and when it happens; the details below help us understand the problem and whether it is safe to bring the car in.

Revs rise without matching acceleration

Slipping can involve fluid, pressure, clutch or internal wear issues. Avoid repeatedly accelerating to test the problem.

Delayed or harsh engagement

Tell us whether it happens selecting Drive or Reverse, during a particular shift, or only after the car warms up.

Warning or restricted performance

Photograph the warning while safely parked and note when it appeared. Clearing a code does not repair its underlying cause.

Leak, noise or burning smell

Different fluids and components can produce similar clues. Do not identify a leak by colour alone or add an unspecified fluid.

Stop safely if the car loses drive or the fault becomes severeDo not force the selector or keep driving with severe slipping, a major leak, smoke or an overheating warning. Switch off when safe and call for advice. Recovery must use a method suitable for the vehicle and drivetrain.

What a major repair quote should cover

Look beyond the price of the gearbox

Once the fault is understood, compare what each quote includes. The price of a replacement gearbox may exclude fitting, while a rebuild quote needs to identify the parts being renewed.

The work and replacement parts
We identify the failed components, what will be replaced and what remains serviceable, including whether torque converter work is needed and included.
Fluids and supporting work
Confirm the specified fluid, filter or pan arrangement and seals. If damaged parts have contaminated the fluid, the cooling circuit also needs assessment before the repaired or replacement gearbox goes back into use.
Coding and verification
Some jobs require coding or a relearn procedure so the controls can adjust to the repaired unit. The quote should state which procedure applies and how leaks, gear engagement and the original symptom will be checked after installation.
Time and warranty
Component work, a bench rebuild and ordering a replacement unit have different timelines. Confirm an estimate after diagnosis and get the applicable parts and workmanship warranty terms in writing.

Answers before a big decision

Transmission repair questions

How much does gearbox repair cost in Dubai?

A targeted component repair is estimated at AED 1,500–4,500, a conventional automatic rebuild at AED 3,500–10,000+, and a suitable used automatic fitted to a common Japanese or Korean car at AED 3,500–8,500. These estimates include 5% VAT. DSG, CVT and luxury units can cost more; we confirm the complete work and price for your car.

Is it cheaper to rebuild or replace a transmission?

There is no universal answer. Compare the confirmed internal damage, parts availability, complete installed price, unit condition and warranty. A used unit can have a lower purchase price but different history and coverage; a rebuild should clearly identify what is renewed.

Will changing the gearbox oil fix slipping?

Not necessarily. Correct fluid maintenance may address a service requirement, but it cannot restore worn internal parts. Slipping, contamination or a warning should be investigated before deciding whether fluid service, a component repair or major work is appropriate.

How long will a transmission repair take?

Some accessible component faults can be resolved more quickly than a rebuild. Removal, internal inspection, parts sourcing and bench work can take several days or longer. Ask for an expected completion date after diagnosis, with any parts delays explained.

Can you diagnose a gearbox fault from a warning code?

A code helps direct testing but does not prove which component should be replaced. Diagnosis may also need live data, electrical and fluid checks, mechanical testing and a safe road test. We explain the evidence supporting the recommended repair.

Can I drive a car with a transmission fault?

It depends on the fault and the vehicle’s instructions. Stop and seek advice for loss of drive, severe slipping, a major leak, smoke or an overheating warning. Do not continue driving just because the car can still move. Recovery may prevent further damage.

What warranty comes with a gearbox repair?

Warranty terms depend on the approved work and the parts or replacement unit supplied. Ask for the duration, coverage, exclusions and maintenance conditions in writing before authorizing the job. A used replacement unit and a rebuilt unit may have different terms.
