Glass and film work together
What does a tint percentage actually mean?
A film labeled 20% VLT transmits less visible light than a film labeled 50% VLT. Shop descriptions such as “50% tint” can be ambiguous, so ask whether the figure means light transmission or darkness.
Existing glass also reduces light transmission. For example, 70% glass with 70% film gives an approximate combined VLT of 49%, not 70%. The fitted result needs measurement; the film label alone cannot establish compliance.
Factory privacy glass may already look dark, but its shade alone does not tell you how much solar heat it rejects. Check the glass specification before adding film, because another layer also reduces light transmission. The calculator shows that relationship; it cannot approve a film or replace measurement of the fitted glass.
