How to Renew Car Registration in Dubai

To renew car registration in Dubai, arrange valid motor insurance, pass the RTA technical inspection if your vehicle needs one, clear the required fines and complete the renewal through an official RTA channel. For a private light vehicle, the renewal charge is AED 370 including Knowledge and Innovation fees. A required standard inspection adds AED 170, bringing those two charges to AED 540 before insurance, repairs, fines or delivery.

The Mulkiya is your vehicle ownership certificate. Renewing it updates the vehicle licence, rather than your driving licence. This guide covers an existing Dubai registration for a private car. A first registration, ownership transfer, plate change or renewal in another emirate can involve different requirements.

What car registration renewal costs in Dubai

Separate the renewal transaction from the inspection and insurance when planning your budget. The following figures apply to a standard private light vehicle and were checked against RTA information on 5 October 2026.

ItemPublished chargeWhen it applies
Vehicle ownership renewalAED 350 plus AED 20AED 370 including Knowledge and Innovation fees
Standard technical inspectionAED 150 plus AED 20AED 170 if the vehicle needs inspection
Renewal and standard inspection togetherAED 540Combined charges before the separate costs below
Optional walk-in inspection serviceAdditional AED 100At participating centres when using the walk-in option without a booking
Light vehicle reinspectionAED 50 plus AED 20AED 70 in listed reinspection charges after a failed test
Optional certificate deliveryAED 20 standard or AED 35 same dayDelivery selection offered during renewal

These are authority service charges, not a workshop repair package. Insurance premiums, defect repairs, unpaid fines, late fees and any plate services are separate. A car that qualifies for an inspection exemption does not need the AED 170 standard test. Review the itemised checkout total for your vehicle and selected channel before paying.

Budget for the work the car actually needs. A renewal fee does not include fixing a worn tyre, replacing a failed lamp or repairing a leak. Ask for those repairs to be quoted separately so that an inspection bill and a garage bill are easy to compare.

When to renew and preserve remaining validity

You can apply up to 150 days before your registration expires. That gives you time to arrange cover, investigate a fault or work around travel. However, RTA calculates an early renewal’s new validity from the application submission date. Renewing much earlier can use up some of the time remaining on your current certificate.

A practical approach is to check the expiry date early, then schedule the inspection and renewal close enough together for the test result to remain valid. A passed technical inspection certificate lasts 30 days from issue. Do not complete the test months before you intend to submit the renewal.

  • Check the registration expiry on your current vehicle licence.
  • Check the insurance start and end dates separately.
  • Allow time to repair a defect and return for inspection.
  • Keep a personal calendar reminder even if you receive an RTA message.

Registration and insurance can expire on different dates. A reminder about one does not confirm the other is current. Keep your registered phone number and email correct so that booking details and the renewed certificate reach you.

Prepare the records needed for successful renewal

For ordinary vehicle ownership renewal, RTA lists no separate document submission requirement. The insurer updates the insurance record electronically and the inspection centre updates the test record when a test is required. Having a policy PDF or a paper pass report does not by itself confirm that these records have reached the traffic system.

Before starting, have your account or UAE Pass access, vehicle details, registered phone and payment method ready. Keep your Emirates ID, current Mulkiya and insurance information available if a centre or support agent needs to identify your record. Additional transactions can require additional paperwork.

Make sure insurance is active and linked

The insurance must be valid when you renew. RTA’s current service conditions state a minimum validity of six months, including the renewal grace period. Confirm the proposed cover and effective dates with your insurer before purchasing, particularly if you plan to renew early or the existing registration has already expired.

If insurance is missing from the renewal screen, ask the insurer to check the electronic update against the correct vehicle and chassis details. Keep the policy reference available. Buying another policy before identifying the problem could leave you paying twice without correcting the record.

Clear fines and investigate any account restrictions

Review the fines and restrictions shown against the vehicle. Pay the required outstanding fines through official channels and keep the receipt. An unresolved restriction needs attention from the authority that issued it, rather than another attempt to pay the renewal fee.

If you have more than one vehicle, check the wider Traffic File when the system refuses a transaction. RTA’s guidance includes rules about the earliest expired vehicle in the file. Describe the exact error to RTA on 800 9090 instead of assuming the selected car is the only record involved.

Check whether your car needs an inspection

The inspection exemption is conditional. RTA’s inspection service says a first owner’s new, zero-mileage vehicle can be exempt for three years from the year of manufacture or registration, whichever comes first. A transfer of ownership requires inspection even during the first three years. A recently purchased used car is not automatically exempt because its model year is recent.

Check the requirement displayed for your own vehicle before booking. If a qualifying new car is unexpectedly asked to undergo inspection, contact RTA to resolve the record. If registration has expired, confirm eligibility rather than relying on the exemption described for timely renewal.

Use the approved renewal inspection, not a general garage health check or a pre-purchase report. A workshop can diagnose and repair faults, but its assessment does not replace the official technical inspection result used for licensing.

Book the renewal inspection before visiting a centre

RTA requires an appointment for renewal technical inspections through its website or the RTA Dubai app, subject to the listed exemptions. Choose the vehicle, inspection type, approved centre and available time, then keep the confirmation received by SMS or email.

The exceptions include eligible People of Determination and senior Emiratis and residents with Dubai-registered vehicles, the Tasjeel Hatta centre and reinspection after a failed technical test. Check the current conditions for your case. RTA also advertises an optional walk-in service at participating centres for an additional AED 100.

Check the selected centre’s working hours and available tests before travelling. Opening hours differ, and a location offering inspection may not offer every licensing transaction at the same time. RTA lists an expected 32 minutes for a light vehicle inspection, but that is not a promise covering queuing, repairs or the complete renewal visit.

Check the car before its inspection appointment

Start with visible faults and symptoms you already know about. RTA’s vehicle inspection preparation brochure covers checks including the exterior, glass, wipers, lights, tyres and boot equipment. Preparation helps you identify work in advance, but it cannot guarantee a pass.

  • Look for damaged tyres, uneven wear and sidewall cracks. Check pressure against the vehicle’s recommended cold pressures.
  • Check headlights, indicators, brake lights and the high-mounted brake lamp with another person helping.
  • Look for glass damage and test the wipers and washers.
  • Check that seat belts latch and retract properly.
  • Look for fluid beneath the parked car and note any recurring warning lights.
  • Check that required safety equipment is present and accessible.

RTA’s renewal guidance sets a maximum tyre age of five years from manufacture and says damaged tyres must be changed to pass. Age alone is not a condition check. A tyre with a bulge or exposed cord needs attention even if it is newer, and uneven wear can justify checking the cause before fitting replacements.

If a warning light, poor braking or a recurring leak needs investigation, arrange a diagnostic check before the appointment. Give the garage the symptom and any existing test report so it can propose relevant work. Do not ask for fault codes to be erased simply to hide a warning.

If the vehicle fails, retain the report and have each listed defect explained. Agree the repair scope, keep the invoices and confirm the reinspection arrangements with the centre. A fault repair and a successful reinspection are separate stages.

Complete car registration renewal through official channels

Once the required records are ready, use RTA’s vehicle ownership renewal service. The website and RTA Dubai app check insurance and inspection validity before payment. Keep the same vehicle selected throughout the transaction, particularly if your account contains several cars.

  1. Sign in using the identification options offered by the official channel, such as your account or UAE Pass.
  2. Select the vehicle and open Renew and Amend Vehicle Data Ownership, then choose the renewal service.
  3. Review the vehicle information and the insurance and inspection checks. Resolve any blocked requirement.
  4. Review the fees, contact details and certificate delivery choice before paying.
  5. Save the confirmation and check the issued Vehicle Ownership Certificate.

RTA lists the renewal service time as instant when the transaction can be completed. That describes the administrative issue of the certificate. It does not include arranging insurance, waiting for an electronic record correction, repairing the car or receiving a physical delivery.

A confirmation that payment was taken is worth keeping, but check the actual certificate and new expiry date as well. If the screen stops during payment, check your transaction history and reference before submitting another payment.

Vehicles that do not need technical inspection must be renewed through online channels according to RTA’s service conditions. For an in-person application, the owner or legal representative must attend. Ask about representation before sending a friend, employee or collection driver with the car.

If you are outside the UAE while the car remains in Dubai, check what can be completed digitally and how any required inspection will be arranged. If the vehicle itself is abroad, RTA lists a separate attested inspection-certificate procedure. Contact RTA about that process before paying for an overseas test.

Resolve renewal blockers without repeating unnecessary steps

The message on the screen should guide the next action. Make a note of its wording and the transaction reference before contacting support. Sharing those details is more useful than describing every error as a failed renewal.

  • Insurance not accepted. Ask the insurer to confirm the active dates, vehicle details and electronic submission.
  • Inspection missing or expired. Check the certificate issue date and ask the centre whether the result was uploaded.
  • Fines or Traffic File restriction. Review the identified vehicle and restriction with RTA or the issuing authority.
  • Vehicle details do not match. Check whether an amendment is needed before continuing.
  • Payment taken but certificate missing. Use the receipt and transaction reference to check the outcome before paying again.

A repaint, changed plate or other amendment can involve a different service from ordinary renewal. If you have changed the vehicle’s colour, follow the colour-change approval and registration steps so that the recorded details match the car. Renewal does not automatically authorise a modification.

Understand expiry, grace periods and separate penalties

RTA states that registration is valid for a maximum of 12 months, followed by a 30-day renewal grace period. Plan around the printed expiry date. Do not rely on a grace period as permission to drive with expired registration or without valid insurance.

Late renewal charges depend on the vehicle category and length of delay. Check the amount shown for your record. A charge for renewing late is different from a traffic penalty for using an expired-registration vehicle on the road. Those should not be combined into one fixed renewal price.

RTA also says a Traffic File can be blocked if the expired vehicle registration is not renewed within two months of expiry, with notification by SMS. If you have already missed the date, check your record promptly and arrange a safe, lawful way to get any required inspection completed.

Insurance cover should be checked with the insurer against the actual policy and dates. Do not assume that an extra month of cover renews the registration, or that every claim outcome can be predicted solely from the Mulkiya date.

Verify the renewed Mulkiya and save the certificate

The Vehicle Ownership Certificate can be received digitally by SMS or email. RTA also lists printing at self-service machines and Apple Wallet through the RTA Dubai app. Choose optional delivery only if you need that service and check the address before paying for it.

  • Check the vehicle and plate details against the car you renewed.
  • Read the new registration expiry date.
  • Review the insurance and any mortgage details shown.
  • Save the e-card or a printable copy where you can retrieve it.
  • Keep the renewal receipt with your vehicle records.

If the certificate message does not arrive, check the registered contact details and use the Document Validation option linked from the RTA renewal service. RTA says the Vehicle Licence can be saved on your phone or printed to show the relevant authorities.

Questions about renewing car registration in Dubai

Can I renew without taking the car for a test?

Yes, if the vehicle qualifies for the technical inspection exemption. Check its own RTA record. A garage report cannot replace a required official test, and changing ownership requires inspection even within the first three years.

Is insurance included in the AED 540 total?

No. AED 540 combines AED 370 for private light vehicle renewal and AED 170 for the standard inspection. Insurance, repairs, fines, late fees, optional delivery and any additional services are separate.

How long can I use a passed inspection?

The technical inspection certificate is valid for 30 days from issue. Finish renewal within that validity window. If the result is missing online, ask the inspection centre to check the electronic record.

Do I need new number plates every year?

Ordinary renewal can keep the existing plate number and design. A plate change, replacement of lost or damaged plates and ownership renewal are different selections with their own requirements and charges.

Must I replace a lost physical Mulkiya before renewing?

Check the digital vehicle record and the ordinary renewal service first. RTA provides a separate lost or damaged certificate service, but lists no document submission requirement for ordinary renewal. Do not assume a replacement card must always be purchased first.

Can I renew an Abu Dhabi car through Dubai RTA?

This guide covers Dubai registration. A vehicle registered in another emirate follows that emirate’s licensing process. Confirm the renewal route with its licensing authority, even if you currently live in Dubai.

Does a workshop check guarantee the car will pass?

No. A workshop can identify and repair faults before the appointment. The approved inspection centre carries out the licensing test and records the result. Keep any failure report so the repair work addresses the listed defects.
