What does a pre-purchase inspection cover?
The inspection brings together physical checks, diagnostic information and a road test where permitted. Agree what can be inspected before booking, including any limits on access or testing.
Transmission and driveline
Visible leaks and operation during an authorized road test. How the car changes gear, accelerates or vibrates can point to a problem, but further testing may be needed to identify its cause.
Brakes, steering and suspension
Accessible components, signs of wear, tire condition and handling observations. Record restricted access or tests that could not be completed.
Body and visible repair evidence
Panel fit, finish inconsistencies, corrosion and visible signs of previous repair. No visual inspection can prove that every concealed area is original or undamaged.
Electrical systems and cabin
Diagnostic scan, warning lights, accessible controls, lighting, windows and AC operation. A stored code needs interpretation; a clean scan is not proof of a fault-free car.
Road behavior and records
Road testing where permission, safety and conditions allow. Compare the vehicle identification number (VIN) and mileage entries in available service records with the car’s details; gaps or inconsistencies need clarification.

The fee reflects the vehicle and the checks agreed for it. If a finding needs specialist testing, that work is quoted separately. Confirm the report contents and delivery time alongside the price.

Use the report to plan your next step
The written findings help you weigh repair needs against the asking price. Check that the report identifies the car by model and VIN and records any checks that could not be completed. An untested item is different from one checked with no fault found.
Safety concerns
Findings affecting safe driving need attention before the car is used. Examples include a significant fluid leak or a damaged safety-related component.
Unresolved faults
A warning code, unexplained noise or possible previous damage may need further testing. Agree who will authorize and pay for that work before deciding.
Wear and maintenance
Service items, tires and cosmetic issues help you plan the next stage of ownership. Separate immediate repair needs from work that can be scheduled.
These are examples of useful report priorities, not findings from a particular customer’s car. Repair estimates remain provisional until the fault and parts scope are confirmed.
Useful evidence with honest limits
What an inspection cannot guarantee
- Every hidden or intermittent fault
- The assessment records conditions observed at the time. A short test may not reproduce an occasional fault, and concealed internal parts are not examined without separately agreed access.
- A complete accident or flood history
- Visible clues can raise concerns, but the absence of clues is not proof that no damage occurred. Review available history too. RTA’s Technical Vehicle Status Report does not include accident data, so it cannot establish an accident-free history.
- Verified mileage from one reading
- The odometer display alone cannot establish true mileage. Service records and other available evidence should be considered; a scan is not a universal mileage-authentication tool.
- A future reliability warranty
- An inspection reduces uncertainty; it does not predict every future failure. The report also does not establish ownership, finance clearance or the seller’s legal right to sell.
Choose the assessment you need
How a PPI differs from other checks
A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) gives you a condition assessment to weigh against the asking price and likely repair costs. An official registration or transfer test follows its own testing process and does not replace this buying assessment.
If you already own the car and need a warning light or particular fault investigated, diagnostic testing focuses on that problem. The tests are selected around the symptom rather than a general buying assessment.
For issues identified during inspection, we can discuss separate suspension repair or transmission assessment. An inspection booking does not authorize repairs.

When should I arrange the inspection?
Once you have shortlisted a car, arrange inspection before committing to the purchase where possible. Leave time to read the report and investigate significant concerns instead of booking immediately before a transfer deadline.
How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?
Allow roughly two to three hours for many routine workshop assessments, with the actual duration and report delivery confirmed at booking. Vehicle complexity, access, road-test conditions or additional authorized tests can extend the time.
Can you inspect a car from a private seller or dealer?
Yes, subject to the vehicle’s suitability and the owner’s permission. Agree how the car will reach the workshop, who supplies the keys and whether road testing is permitted.
Will the report tell me whether to buy the car?
We explain the findings, repair priorities and remaining uncertainties. You decide whether the condition, price and likely ownership costs meet your needs. No inspection should promise that a used car will never develop a fault.
Can a car pass registration testing and still need repairs?
Yes. A registration-related test and a buying assessment answer different questions. Review service history, condition and repair needs even if the vehicle has recently passed an official test.
Does a diagnostic scan detect every problem?
No. Mechanical wear, body damage and intermittent conditions may not produce a useful code. Recently cleared codes can also limit the available evidence. Physical checks and the permitted road test remain important.
